| Population and the environmental issues are very much related though very little studies have been carried out regarding this issue. This is an attempt to relate population and its impacts on environment focusing solid waste management. The objectives of this study are to identify the major type of solid waste and their source, quantify the solid waste generation rate, evaluate the present state of solid waste management and evaluate the perception and reactions of local people towards SWM. The major methodologies used to collect data are Questionnaire survey, Small group discussion, Sampling, Semi structured interview and Field observation. For calculation and presentation of data computer programming were used.
The major fraction of waste is organic in nature. Papers, Plastics, textiles, construction materials are the other major components of solid waste. The sources of solid waste are analyzed on the basis of observation. The major sources of solid waste generation are found as residential source, commercial sources and open area sources. Solid Waste Generation from the selected house holds is found to be 0.33 kg per capita per day which is slightly more than the generation from rent dwellers i.e. 0.32 kg per capita per day. The average solid waste generation rate is 0.325 kg per capita per day. At household level waste is stored in container, dust bins and cardboard. Few households keep different dustbins to store degradable and non degradable waste separately. The waste collection systems prevalent in this ward are Road side dump collection, Door to door collection system, Bell System and Container System. Few households are paying for the solid waste management services. Large numbers of households are willing to pay of the service if improvement is done. People seem very cooperative in solving the solid waste problem and its proper management. It is realized that environmental degradation is because of their own activity. They feel the necessity of involvement of private sector for waste management services.
