Soil and Water Resource Management

Land degradation includes erosion by water and wind, and salinisation. These are regarded as major threats to mankind's ability to use the land productively. It explores both physical and social aspects of the problem.

Land use activities that remove or destroy ground cover result in exposure of soil to the erosive forces of wind, water, ice, and gravity. Under exposed conditions, erosion and sedimentation can occur at accelerated rates many times greater than normal.

Nepal is second richest country in water. Water is of prime concern in agricultural countries as Nepal . But, sedimentations, pesticides, domestic and industrial sewerage are degrading water quality. These types of phenomena helps to reduce water storage capacity of lake and pounds, increase in river bed, change the pH of receiving waters, reduce dissolved oxygen, and increase turbidity, thereby killing aquatic organisms, reducing photosynthesis, destroying wildlife habitats and ultimately degrades the total environment.

With a view to enhance soil and water environment, Soil and Water Resource Management programme of Friends of Nature, is working following objectives.

  • To conduct research activities on soil and water management
  • To reduce the soil erosion through scientific management and to maintain the productivity of land.
  • To maintain the stability of land during the infrastructure development and promote sustainability.
  • To aware people on proper water and soil management.
  • To monitor the water quality and distribute the pure drinking water
