Inter-School Owl Painting Competion
Theme: “Environmental Damage: Threat to Owls”
Background
There are 9775 species of birds on earth out of which Nepal has 863 species (8.83% of the total). Also, there are 222 species of Owls around the world out of which Nepal has 20 species. This percentage is also quite impressive with 9.01% of the total. Owl number also constitutes about 2.32% of the total number of bird species found in the country. Four species of owls are nationally threatened which are Dusky Eagle Owl Bubo coromandus, Tawny Fish Owl Ketupa flavipes, Grass Owl Tyto capensis, and Spot-bellied Eagle Owl Bubo nipalensis. The former two are kept in critically endangered list and thus need urgent intervention and the latter two are kept in endangered list which also need some quick conservation initiatives (The State of Nepal’s Birds 2004).
Birds are the most vulnerable of all wildlife. Besides being killed illegally for notorious wildlife trade, birds are also killed unknowingly in large numbers by small children which makes the matter worse. Killing of birds for wildlife trade is quite out of our direct concern because we virtually do not have critical role to play however we could contribute something to reduce the killing of birds for fun by small children without knowing the impact of their actions. This painting competition is also a part of such initiation by Friends of Nature. We sincerely hope that this program will help in raising the conservation awareness of the students of different schools of Kathmandu Valley. This program, we hope, will be particularly helpful in making the school children aware regarding the ecological importance of Owls which are regarded as unlucky and evil bird in most of the world traditions.
